Everyone knows, photography is the one thing that will preserve forever from your wedding day. So with that, every couple always wants their photos to look absolutely perfect for their all inclusive mountain wedding. But how do you ensure you’re in love with your photos rain or shine?
With all of the questions around “What is my back-up plan if it rains on my wedding day?,” we thought it be helpful to all of our couples and those seeking a wedding venue and professional photographer to first sit down with one of our preferred wedding vendors and ask some specific questions.

When you see rain in the forecast for your couples, what is the first thing you tell them?
“Don’t stress!” — I know, easier said than done. But it’s so important to ensure the photos and your day continues to go smoothly and beautifully! We can’t control the weather so we have to embrace it!! I also remind them it’s vital to be flexible and to welcome what the weather brings. And of course, that no matter what I promise to deliver them amazing images! The rain can’t stop that!
Do you have to use special photography equipment when it rains on a couple’s wedding day?
Mostly just Mitchell holding an umbrella over me and my gear while shooting ;)! ha! In all seriousness, I bring a pretty umbrella for my couples to hold but I always encourage them to remove it for some portraits as well. I do have off-camera flash setups I use in the case of absolute downpours. If we have to find indoor alternatives we use a flash – but I always strive to do portraits outside if possible. Even if it’s under a covered area. I love that because we are still able to get a lot of natural light!
What are your favorite things about CR, that make a wedding (rain or shine) easier on couples who get unexpected weather?
There are so many areas that are covered but still outside! The covered patio, the pavilion, the front of the venue (just behind the barn doors)! I love those locations during rain because we are still able to capture the beauty of CR while keeping everyone dry! I also love that the bridal suite is so beautiful and filled with bright, natural light. Rain or shine – I’m always doing a lot of portraits in there!
Do you always encourage couples to get wet in the rain, or do you let them suggest that?
YES!! I highly encourage them to get wet on their wedding day! I personally keep them (mostly) dry pre-ceremony. That’s when I’m really utilizing all of the covered/indoor options. I know they want to look perfect walking down the aisle and I absolutely support that! Post-ceremony is when I request they embrace the rain for a few photos. They really can turn out so good! Above all, I support the couple and their requests. If they are not into getting wet and being in the rain, we make it work! However, most of the time my couples don’t mind it!
How can cloudy or rainy days actually turn out to be better for photography?
I love a nice cloudy day because of the light it gives. The light is spread evenly and diffused – stripping the scene of harsh light! A lot of our couples do First Looks and those are typically done earlier in the day. On a sunny day, it can be difficult to find the perfect shaded spot that early on. Taking photos at noon on a cloudy day creates a soft, even light that is flattering on the subject!
What are your 3 top tips for making a weather challenge easier
First: Be flexible and open to what your photographer suggests. They know what will look the best and be the most flattering on you for your portraits. Trust them!
Second: Go with it and embrace the weather – rain, shine, snow! The weather on your wedding day is apart of your story and your day. Allow your photographer to truly capture it as it is.
Lastly: Be prepared for it. Have a solid plan B. Communicate with your vendors about the weather as your day approaches so everyone is on the same page! Every vendor plays a large part in any changes that may need to take place due to the weather! Bonus tip! Remember, you are GETTING MARRIED! Focus on that and less on the details. Enjoy it and have the best day ever!! Rain of Shine :)!
